The Loudoun Education Foundation, an Ashburn-based nonprofit dedicated to supporting the students and teachers of Loudoun County Public Schools by funding educational programs and other resources, has hired Leesburg’s Kari Murphy as its new director of development.
Murphy is a 14-year Loudoun County resident and spent 10 of those years as a volunteer and staffer at Loudoun Habitat for Humanity, according to a Monday announcement.
“Now I have the opportunity to build connections and create opportunities to enhance the classroom experience with a wide impact for both students and teachers,” Murphy said in a prepared statement.
Both of Murphy’s parents and her paternal grandmother were career public school teachers, which officials said makes LEF “a great fit” for her talents.
“She witnessed the time, energy and extra personal funds [the teachers in her family] dedicated to their respective students and schools,” officials said.
In her new role, Murphy will oversee LEF’s fundraising efforts, including its ongoing, five-year Advancing Excellence major gift campaign.
LEF hopes to raise $15 million through the campaign by June 2022.
Monies raised will fund initiatives created to advance LEF’s mission to “invest in critical and innovative programs to foster the academic success and well-being of students and teachers” in Loudoun County Public Schools, officials said.
These include the after-school STEM learning programs PROPEL and Level Up, as well as teacher scholarships and classroom grants “to help financially support teachers’ creative ideas and bring unique opportunities to their students,” Murphy said.
“With her background in the nonprofit sector, as well as the relationships she’s built within the Loudoun County community, we know she will help us expand LEF’s efforts to support students and teachers,” LEF Board of Trustees President Scott Miller said of Murphy in a prepared statement.
Murphy lives with her husband, Brendan, and two sons, Daniel and Will, who attend Leesburg’s Smart’s Mill Middle School and Tuscarora High School, respectively, according to officials.
She further volunteers for the Loudoun Coalition on Women and Girls and as a Board Trustee for the Westmoreland Davis Memorial Foundation/Morven Park.
