Escuela SMART Academy preparing for 1st day of school with new principal, new opportunities

The school’s new principal Natasha Allen has plans for students and their families to succeed in the Old South End community.

TOLEDO, Ohio — It’s back to class for Toledo Public Schools and students and their families had the chance to walk the halls before saying goodbye to summer.

The new school year brings something new to the bilingual multi-cultural school known as Escuela SMART Academy in the Old South End. 

And students were excited as they attended Tuesday’s open house. 

“I’m feeling very good and I hope that sooner or later they add football,” said Lemontray Davis, a 4th grader at Escuela SMART Academy. “And I hope I’m in Mrs. Fisher’s class!”

This year, the school will start with new opportunities and a brand new principal.

Education field day set for small farmers

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Small and urban farmers are invited to join Purdue University’s Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture and the Purdue Student Farm for the Small Farm Education Field Day and Webinar series.

 The in-person field day will be hosted at the Purdue Student Farm in West Lafayette on July 29. Purdue Experts will lead the following demonstrations:

  • Student farm packhouse tour and overview of good agriculture practices (GAPs).
  • Weed identification and understanding thresholds.
  • Summer cover crops for weed suppression.
  • Infield soil diagnostics and soil health.
  • Vegetable disease, prevention, identification and management.
  • Scouting for mites in high tunnel crops.
  • Black soldier fly composting.
  • Caterpillar tunnels.

Additional crop demonstrations will include hemp, onion, sweet pepper, eggplant, pepper and tomato varieties in various production systems.

The virtual webinar series will convene from noon to 1:30 p.m. ET on the following days:

Field day to highlight herbicide resistance strategies in soybean

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will host a herbicide resistance management field day from 1 to 3 p.m. June 29 at Iowa State University’s Northern Research Farm (south farm) located 1 mile south of Kanawha on R35, or 1040 James Ave.

This field day will promote effective management of herbicide resistance through known principles of using effective herbicide modes of action, effective rates and appropriate timing strategies.

“Farmers will get a good look at the use of multiple strategies to combat weeds — not just chemicals, but cultural practices as well,” says Angie Rieck-Hinz, a field agronomist with ISU Extension and Outreach.

Effectively managing waterhemp is becoming a bigger challenge due to the development of multiple herbicide-resistant populations. In addition, the use of a cereal rye cover crop with different termination timings and narrow-row soybeans will be used to demonstrate weed suppression strategies.

Press release: 2021 Jackie Robinson Day

As has been tradition each season since 2004, MLB and Clubs will commemorate Jackie Robinson Day at ballparks throughout the league on Thursday, April 15th – the anniversary of Robinson’s historic MLB debut as he broke baseball’s color barrier – or Friday, April 16th. The extra day allows for teams not playing on a traditional “off-day” of the regular season to appropriately commemorate Jackie Robinson Day.

Robinson will continue to be remembered for his inspiring and historic career, his courage and strength amid challenges he faced as he broke baseball’s color barrier, his actions as a social advocate and civil rights icon, and his continued impact on our sport and society. In addition to Club-specific activities in ballparks and virtually, including outreach to their communities, Jackie Robinson Day will be commemorated in the following visual and fan-engaging ways:
